viraphon with vito acconci and serina basta
In the summer of 2005, in Madrid, Spain I collaborated with Vito Acconci and Serina Basta to create the public audio installation Viraphon. Bus stops were affixed with audio jacks into which anyone with standard headphones could plug-in and listen. We imagined it to be an umbilical cord, sort of an eXistenZ-like cronenberg jack, where the body was being infected virally through sound.
Viraphone is a programmatic piece, as it follows the 5 stages of a virus. It penetrates the body, then penetrates the cell, replicates the rna, then multiplies, finally consuming the cell and spreading throughout the body.
The piece was subsequently shown at Diapason gallery in NYC in 2006 as an audio work.
